Lucius Munatius Plancus (87-15 BCE) Roman general, senator and consul who is best known for his cunning politics during the civil wars of the 1st century BCE. He switched allegiances several times and this knack to adapt to changing circumstances - together with shrewd diplomacy - helped him to live through these dangerous years. Life and career* 87 BCE - was born in Tibur* 50s and 40s BCE - Officer in Caesar’s army during Gallic and civil wars. Participated in Caesar’s campaign against Pompeian forces in Spain (46/45 BCE). * 44 BCE - Founded Augusta Raurica (Basel) * 43 BCE - Proconsul of Gallia Comata (= Aquitania, Belcica and Celtica). Founded Lyon while in office. In a war between Marcus Antonius and senate Plaucus remained neutral though he did pay lip service to the latter. His “help” was lukewarm and halfhearted though and went something like this:”Oh, I would love to help Decimus Junus Brutus (besieged by Antonius) but it is sooo difficult. You see, Lepidus and his army are between our forces.” In other words perfect diplomacy :). When the second triumvirate was formed he changed sides and allied with Marcus Antonius.* 42 BCE - Consul together with Lepidus. * 40 BCE - Proconsul of Asia * 36 BCE - Proconsul of Syria. Joined Augustus after Antonius’ unsuccesful campaign against Parthia* 27 BCE - proposed that title of “Augustus” would be granted to Octavianus* 22 BCE - Censor together with Aemilius Lepidus Paullus. They were the last persons who held this office. * 15 BCE - Died in Gaeta, Latium. His mausoleum has survived.image: Marble bust, 1st century CE, LyonSource: Photograph by Rama, Wikimedia Commons, Cc-by-sa-2.0-fr / CC BY-SA 2.0 FR (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/fr/deed.en) -- source link
