brooklynmuseum:It seems that everyone today loves dogs! The ancient Egyptians loved dogs too. From early on Egyptians kept dogs as domestic pets, guardians, herders, and even police assistants. Pet dogs were immortalized in stone, like on the stela of Intef and Senettekh where the couple’s pooch sits under the woman’s chair. Pet dogs were often given either human names or descriptive names like Blackie, Brave One or North Wind. The canine’s loyalty, swiftness, and other qualities that we all know and love, were perceived by the Egyptians as the animal’s link with divinity. The dog or jackal – headed god Anubis was responsible for mummification and protecting the dead in their journey to the afterlife. Millions of dog mummies were buried in temple catacombs where Egyptian worshipers came to send prayers to the gods. Some of these mummies are now on display in Soulful Creatures: Animal Mummies in Ancient EgyptPosted by Yekaterina Barbash -- source link
