Platform bench by George NelsonHe designed the bench in 1945, for visitors to his office at Fortune magazine. To save wood and because he didn’t want visitors to get too comfortable and stay for too long, he used slats for the seat instead of a solid plank. The bench not only served as seating but was used as a base for Herman Miller case goods to raise them off the ground for ease of access and cleaning. The bench is made from birch with the legs stained black, a fully stained version was also produced. It was produced originally for 11 years and in 2002 Vitra started manufacturing it again. -- source link
