The Budget J-22, the Sedco SP-22In the 1980’s Jim and John Davis ran a company called Davis Industries, which was one of the many resurrections of Jennings, the company responsible the the infamous J-22. For those who are unfamilier with the J-22, it was a cheap .22 pocket pistol of extremely questionable quality, barely functional, infamous for its malfunctions jamming, and its dirt cheap price. Today it is made by a company called Jimenez. In 1987, John Davis left Davis industries to found his own company. His dream was to recreate the J-22, so that it could be cheaper and more affordable for the average joe. The result was the SP-22. It was similar in functioning to the J-22, only it used cheaper materials and was of a cruder design. I’m not sure how it was made with cheaper materials, tin cans perhaps? It also lacked certain extravagances such as sights. As a result it was significantly cheaper than the J-22, costing $40, around half of the retail price of the J-22. In gun history, it could be considered a feat of engineering shit. In fact the quality was so bad that no one wanted to buy it. Some who did buy the pistol were dismayed that it would jam after the first round. Some even exploded in user hands, leading to several lawsuits. John Davis’ brother also sued him for $45 million (patent infrindgement) and Sedco went bankrupt and was dissolved two years later. The SP-22 was only manufactured over a three month period. Today SP-22’s are very rare pistols, but only cost around $40 - $60. peashooter does not suggest you buy one. -- source link
