It’s A Feminist Statement’ Not all Muslim women cover their bodies. Not all Muslim women who do are forced to do so. Like freelance writer Hanna Yusuf, who chooses to wear a hijab in a daily act of feminism. In a new video for The Guardian, Yusuf challenges stereotypes by setting out to reclaim the choice to wear a hijab as “a feminist statement.” For more on on how the hijab helps women reclaim their bodies watch the full video here. “To try and attain the unattainable”* I am not Muslim but I am so glad to see this because honestly I had never ever thought about it this way, I feel like I’ve been so ignorant, my eyes and mind have been opened no. just no. the western world sees women as public property therefore they must reveal themselves. in the eastern world women are seen as private property therefore they must cover up.
nothing about that is feminist.
stop glorifying something that gets women abused abandoned and punished when they dont do it! “In a world where a woman is reduced to her sexual allure, what could be more empowering than to reject that” Except to say that and equate it with the hijab is to basically say “don’t objectify me, objectify her.” We should ask instead “why are men allowed to objectify us? Why do they get to set the parameters?” There is no patriarchal religion that benefits women. By definition patriarchal religions benefit patriarchs, i.e. men. The fact women are stoned to death for taking off the hijab is anything but feminist. Being told that you are going to hell if you take off the hijab is anything but feminist. Being excommunicated from your family for refusing to wear the hijab is anything but feminist. You disrespect all the women who risk their lives by refusing to conform to the religious expectation of wearing a hijab by calling it a feminist statement. People don’t choose to wear a hijab, muslim society forces them (socially or physically) to wear a hijab, the day women are not tortured for taking off the hijab we can start talking about ‘feminist’ statements. it doesnt matter if a woman covers up or reveals herself. neither will be “feminist”. to reject being a sexual object by being modest is just to take on another patriarchal ideal. only the female body being made neutral will be liberating. men, already neutral, never have to make these choices. “Feminism isn’t about choice. The problem isn’t whether to eat apples or oranges in your cage, it’s the cage.” -Millie Migritte. -- source link
