solarpunkcast:nat-tea-n-coffee:mapsontheweb:Most of the territory of the present United States was not conquered, but was bought, exchanged or ceded by France, Spain, Mexico, Russia or the United Kingdom.by elordenmundial.comThat’s….that’s not how history works. The dates are more or less correct, but the wording of this is woefully misleading. Like, on a threadbare technically I guess most of the land claimed by what we acknowledge as the present day USA was bought or ceded, but the reality is never so simple. And the fact that most of these exchanges were made between Europeans and their direct Immigrant descendants who “conquered” North and South America only a few generations before gives a really different perspective to the map above.Given the history between European colonialists and Native/Indigenous Americans of straight up genocide, broken treaties, institutionalized racism, and starvation tactics against soveriegn fucking nations that continue through the present day, the map and quote combined just read as eurocentric whitewashing. DISCLAIMER!!!! I am not ragging on @mapsontheweb or @solarpunkcast for posting this as much as trying to highlight how misleading this information is for people who know little about US history and how this narrative (which is what US students are taught through PreK till Highschool Graduation) functions as colonialist propaganda and just straight up erasure of present day Indigenous Nations in North America. They get the benefit of the doubt that they are aware of this and assumed the same for their followers.TL;DR Maps without proper context can be maliciously misleading because we tend to trust them without question.yeah you’re right, my brain filtered this as “hey look, colonizers exchanging land between each other” but yeah I can definitely see how the caption kind of ignores the fact that those parts WERE violently conquered by France, Spain, Mexico, Russia or the United Kingdom. -- source link
