Classic preamble of excuses: “At a time such as the present, which is undeniably destined to bear within itself the germ of sublime developments, at a time when contradictions are piled on contradictions, yet without totally attaining, by their rapid toppling from dizzying heights, the smashing of the antiquated, decaying forms of the present and without penetrating with melody the monotonous oscillations of its pendulum—at such a time, then, the editor of this work, written and given to him by the hand of a friend, considered it to be his unavoidable duty to withhold it no longer from the world and with a steady hand to guide it toward its fate. To be sure, it is only a fragment—though it would have been an easy task for the author to have it appear in a truly scientific form, in a word, to put on the finishing touches, had not time and circumstances intervened—but nevertheless it is of decisive value.” -- source link
