theancientwayoflife:~Stand Attachment in the form of a Statuette of a Youth Carrying a Discus.Artist/Maker: UnknownCulture: Etruscan (Vulcian?)Place: Etruria (Place created)Date: 425 - 375 B.C.Medium: BronzeDepicted is a nude youth as an athlete carrying a discus in his left hand. He stands atop a low base that was probably once attached to a stand used for the suspension of utensils. Statuettes of discus throwers and other athletes were popular ornaments for Etruscan candelabra and utensil stands. The ring emerging from the head of this figure indicates its utilitarian function. It was suspended from a bracket on the wall. Implements such as ladles would have been hung from a ring of hooks attached to the underside of the statuette’s base. -- source link
