Published in January 2002, by the Globe and Mail, this photo showed Canadian soldiers (mistakenly identified as Americans by the newspaper) transporting Taliban prisoners from a United State Air Force plane in Afganistan. However this came as a surprise to the Canadian public as Canadian soldiers were, at this time, just beginning to arrive in Afganistan. The publishing of this photo brought to light the secret that Canadian Special Forces, specifically Joint Task Force 2 had been operating in Afganistan since October of 2001 without the approval or even awareness of Parliament or the Prime Minister.Whether or not the story we are told is actually what happened it makes for an interesting bit of Canadian History.
