thearcanetheory: somedumbindiething: as much as I want to join more dialogue and activist causes, I continually feel like there’s no safe place for me there “but there’s no anti-Semitism in anti-Zionist movements!” Yeah, come collect your folks, people. Ya’ll. what would be so powerful is if folks who identify as anti-zionist also commit to combatting anti-semitism. If all folks were to say, “I am anti-zionist, and I oppose anti-semitism.” and if folks actively were to be aware of it in their movement, and strongly call it out when it it is perpetuated. If they know the painful history of how anti-sem worked, and how it continues today. How to spot it and say, “Whoa, not here.” I know many Jews who have backed out of wider movements calling out Israel’s violent state nationalistic policies due to experiencing tokenization and anti-semitism (which can be used as a form of racism, just as islamophbia intersects with racism). Most of the awful divisive shit I experienced as a Jew was perpetrated by white people over- stepping boundaries in a situation they have little connection with. These folks used the “facts” they learned in church as a kid to continue their anti-semitism, the ancient stuff they learned before denouncing Christianity. Anarchists, communists, progressives, the “left”. Non-jews are socialized with anti-semitism, white people (including white-passing Jews) are socialized with racism. Its shit all people gotta work at combatting and unlearning– consistently. I would like to see radical/ left spaces add anti-semitism to their list of oppressions to combat. If you have come here to help me, you are wasting our time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together. -Lilla Watson -- source link
