Rachel Ruysch 1664- 1750 Rachel Ruysch was an artist of the European Renaissance who specialized in still life paintings. Her father was a botanist and anatomist. She learned a great deal about plant life as a child, which gave her a natural inclination to depict such things in art. At fifteen Rachel was apprenticed to well known flower painter Willem van Aelst. Under his instruction, Rachel began a fruitful career in still life painting. Rachel married a fellow artist, Juriaen Pool and had ten children. She became a member of the the painters’ guild in the Hague and produced work of a circle of international patrons. She became a court painter for art enthusiast Johann Wilhelm and remained in the position until his death. Rachel remained popular for the rest of her life. She continued painting well into old age and began inscribing her age on her work in her 80s. Rachel’s paintings remained popular after her death and are still highly praised in the art community. -- source link
