gregorygalloway:Directed by Hal Ashby, Coming Home was released on 15 February 1978.Jane Fonda had wanted to produce an anti-war film as her first venture under her production company, IPC Films (Indochina Peace Campaign) and hired Nancy Dowd to write a screenplay depicting the experiences of a military wife. Fonda struggled for 6 years to get the film made, and when Producer Jerome Hellman finally got involved the original script was significantly rewritten by Waldo Salt and Robert C. Jones.Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and Sylvester Stallone were all offered the role of Luke Martin, but declined. Jon Voight was being considered for the role of Captain Bob Hyde, but was switched to play Luke Martin and Bruce Dern was cast as Hyde.The film was both a commercial and critical success, and was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Ashby), Best Supporting Actor (Dern), Best Supporting Actress (Penelope Milford), Best Editing (Don Zimmerman).It received 3 Oscars: Best Actor (Voight), Best Actress (Fonda), and Best Screenplay (Dowd, Jones, and Salt). -- source link
