It’s a prom dress. Why did you go so far back just to make a comment like this? Don’t be an asshole.didn’t go that far tbh, her ignorant ass popped up on my dash. she’s being hella disrespectful by wearing this dress that has culture and history that doesn’t belong to her. she’s not suffering the repercussions of this culture. cry all you want it still ain’t yours to wearShe should have bought a regular ass prom dress with no cultural significance instead of buying a qipao and mocking and disrespecting my culture :)She looks great, I don’t normally get in on these types of discussions but she isn’t stealing culture. It makes me very disappointed in how desperate we are to create oppression, we thrive off of how oppressed we are and how much we can overcome it and im sick of it. I’ve had it through the roof with people claiming culture to race, these words are not interchangeable. They are 2 very different things and you do not have to be from a race to be educated and interested in their culture, and I know from growing up in a culture different from my race, you do not need to be from the race of origin to identify with it’s culture. Im sick of this shaming. Making culture a race dependent club promotes racism, it doesn’t end or help it. You can hate me for this I don’t care right now, but you’re all arrogant pricks.“She looks great” cool… but that doesn’t mean that her appropriation can be overlooked. Some random festival cracker can look great in a headdress but she’s still at fault for appropriating native culture and using her privilege to her benefit. We aren’t being “arrogant pricks”, we live in a world where me, being Chinese gets teased when I wear a qipao and white people get celebrated and told how great they look. That’s what appropriation is, society praises her while they oppress us. So stfu and stop trying to justify her ignorant ass. What I wonder is if she wasn’t white if people would still be outraged? She is not making a farce of Chinese culture. It’s just a dress from another culture. If we have come to a point where openly sharing and celebrating beauty in different cultures, whether it be clothing, music, food ect. Is oppressive and offensive then we have completely forgot the point of multiculturalism: to share and celebrate each other’s cultures freely. Also to note: the Qipao was a Chinese fashion based on western dress, to blend the two into a modern style. The Qipao itself is a symbol of multicultural sharing understanding. It would of course be different if she were to wear Qing or Ming style hanfu.you are deliberately missing the point and attempting to invalidate ALL of what was just said by CHINESE women. of course people wouldn’t be as offended if she wasn’t white because white people literally have no personal experience of systematic racism and oppression BASED ON SKIN COLOR. so do nOT play the multicultural “worldly” “sharing is caring” card when it’s apparent that it’s the aesthetics of this dress that appeals to her, not the extensive history of the culture that come with it. if you actually want to come at me with your history and qipao “symbolism”, then you should read up a little more than the first link you found on google. the qipao is derived from a legend of a fisherwoman who fitted the dress to her body shape because its original flowy shape was a hassle to her fishing. the emperor was told in a dream of a beautiful fisherwomen and sent his men to go find her. when she was discovered, she was brought to the Palace and wived.here’s some FACTUAL history: the cheongsam is the original name for the qipao and it is derived from the Manchus who were descendents of the NuZhen tribes. it ORIGINATES from ASIA. it originates from a NATIVE ASIAN TRIBE. please, it’s rly embarrassing to me when you try to make the point of the qipao symbolizing a fusion of western and eastern cultures..puhleease girls be getting so mad over some little ass shit lmao wowwill you shut the fuck up mike can you do that for us. can you not speak when no one was talking to you. can you read? does this have anything to with you mike. Will someone explain to me why it’s disrespectful? I see this kind of stuff a lot. I’m just confused by it.there’s an entire explanation above…..A whole culture taking ownership of a dress design to the point where no other race else can wear it is pretty ridiculous. No one is saying the qipao doesn’t originate from Asia. I don’t know if people are offended because she’s wearing the qipao and she’s not Asian or if she’s wearing it as a prom dress. If it is because she’s wearing it as a prom dress, would people get mad if an ASIAN was wearing it as prom dress? One more point, if people keep making fun of Asians for wearing the qipao, you think it’s right for Asians to make fun of anyone else for wearing it then? No, you should be more against people picking on Asians rather than a white girl clearly appreciating a beautiful design from Asia.Just because it belongs to your race doesn’t mean you have to get angry. It might be funny to you to see another culture using it but not to the point of actual rage, that’s when it gets unnecessary and things aren’t as serious as you’re making it out to be.you guys are really blind and dumb as hell i can’t even believe it. i don’t know why I’m bothering with this shit. but. since you want to write paragraphs in “ignoramus” let me clarify:stop saying Asian, we are talking specifically about Chinese culture and the traditions of such. SHE IS WHITE. SHE IS THE OPPRESSOR. and who are you? are you Chinese? are you white? what are you? who are you? don’t tell people in one culture how to deal with and feel about an issue that dates back centuries. they aren’t making fun of her either they’re calling her out for cultural appropriation. it’s not a fucking costume!!! how many other ways can this be said? !1 don’t tell us what the fuck is “pretty ridiculous” just read like what the fuck just read and just comprehend and just listen -- source link
