Lucile Duplessis 1771- 1794 Also known as Lucile Desmoulins, Lucile Duplessis who lived and died during the French Revolution and Reign of Terror. She was born to a wealthy family and was a high strung child. She is known through her diaries, which show her as an opinionated, smart and well read girl. Her idol was Rousseau, from whom she drew inspiration. She fell in love with one of her mother’s admirers, Camille Desmoulins. Camille fell in love with Lucile too but when he asked her father to marry her in 1787, he refused. It was not until after the fall of the Bastille that Lucile’s father gave the couple his blessing. The two were married in 1790 and their love lasted until death. Lucile was greatly admired for her beauty by her contemporaries but she also had a firm resolve and a confident woman’s mind. She was described by Violet Methley as having “a strong soul and a brave spirit in that dainty Dresden-china girl, who, at first sight, would seem to need a landscape by Watteau as her fittest frame." The couple was close friends with many important figures in the revolution. Robespierre was the Godfather of their child and Stanislas Fréron was a frequent guest in their home. It was during the Reign of Terror, under Robespierre, that the two would face their deaths. Camille vouched for moderacy in France, an unpopular move among those in charge. On the 4th of April, 1794, Desmoulins and his followers were sent to the guillotine after a dramatic trial. Lucile was not arrested until the 13th of April, she was executed the same day at the age of twenty three. -- source link
