The Italian M1 GarandAfter World War II Italy formally adopted that M1 Garand as its official battle rifle. Beretta and Breda were given license to manufacture the M1 and production began in 1952. About 100,000 would be produced. Much of the tooling and machinery used was surplus from American factories, sold at bargain prices. Oddly enough, many of these rifles would be sold and exported to Denmark for use with the Danish Army. A classic American rifle, built in Italy, and used by the Danes. Whodathunkit! In 1959 the Italian military dropped the M1 Garand for the BM-59, which was an M1 chambered for 7.62 Nato with a twenty round detachable box magazine. Many Italian Garands were taken apart and remanufactured as BM-59’s. -- source link
