Menelik II (r. 1889 to 1913), and later his daughter Zewditu I (r. 1916 to 1930), would be the last Ethiopian monarchs who could claim uninterrupted direct male descent from Solomon of Israel and the Queen of Sheba. (Haile Selassie had uninterrupted direct female descent.) Of course, this assumes that the Solomonic restoration by Yekuno Amlak I in 1262, when he overthrew the last ruler of the Zagwe dynasty, was in fact true. Yekuno Amlak I claimed direct male line descent from the old Axumite royal house that the Zagwes had replaced on the throne. But the Axumites had been pushed out of power over 300 years earlier, so verifying that fact is a little difficult… -- source link
