You, Izuku, following Katsuki and only really being able to keep a set distance while always seeing him at his back because that’s how Katsuki wants to keeps things. As you, Izuku, dared to try and show a kindness to someone who would only see it as you looking down on them because their perspective, sense of self and reality was already so damn skewed. Katsuki pressing ahead waiting for no one, least of all Izuku, yet there Izuku does remain because he is if nothing else determined as well as not being one who knows when to back down, or rather, won’t let himself stop because if he stops then he’s not progressing and if he’s not progressing then he has no hope of filling the role he accepted on a whim in some back alley from a walking skeleton who spews his bodyweight in blood. What I love is the fear. You can be determined but determination doesn’t necessarily cancel out fear nor does it entail ousting it entirely. Passing this test already feels impossible because it can’t really be done without first breaching THIS impossible task. Of which Izuku really doesn’t fathom how he will, he will try, but there is that part of him that acknowledges how fruitless this will be, how little time they have, and yet that determination to push forward anyway. Both because he has no choice but to try and also because nothing in him will let him NOT at least try. He’s been pushing forward in the face of impossibility all his life. This is no different. What’s different is before he’s been able to see a way through, a way to make things work, or at least been able to cling tight enough to a delusion so it felt possible. This is one area he’s never been successful and thus cannot see the way through outside of keep walking forward until he can’t.
