60 year old fireworksIn 1959, the Kilauea volcano put on one of the most spectacular shows seen from any volcano. An eruption began at the Kilauea Iki crater, just outside the main caldera, late in the year. The crater itself was filled with a lava lake that still has not completely solidified today. On top of the lava lake, the fire fountaining that accompanied that eruption was spectacular. This is a photo from 1959 taken by one of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists, J.P. Eaton. This is a 350 meter tall, V-shaped lava fountain. This lava fountain is taller than the Chrysler Building in New York City and splits into 2 parts. The highest fountaining from this eruption reached nearly 600 meters tall (1900 feet that’s higher than the CN Tower in Toronto.I keep telling myself that if Kilauea ever does anything like this eruption again, I’m going to find a way to drop everything and go witness it in person. Lava fountains the height of skyscrapers make for some pretty effective fireworks.-JBBImage credit: Hawaiian Volcano Observatory:http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/history/1959Nov14/main.htmlTypes of volcanic eruptions.http://volcano.oregonstate.edu/education/vwlessons/kinds/kinds.html -- source link
