clioancientart:The characteristic Roman Legionary iron sword and bronze scabbard of the 1st Century AD and associated fittings. This sword and scabbard were found together, in the River Thames at Fulham, London. The tinned bronze buckle and belt plate, the short sword and the various find spots around London and the south coast of England. Together they provide a complete picture of a Roman Legionary soldier’s hand weapons and basic gear, other than his clothing, in the 1st Century AD. A very small section of chain mail armor, part of a chain mail short that would have been worn over the soldier’s tunic, is shown on the torso. Note the elaborate acanthus leaf and vine scroll decoration on the central part of the scabbard and the image of the She Wolf suckling Romulus and Remus at the top of the scabbard. All in all, a notable display of Roman ideological and military power. In the Roman galleries of The British Museum, London.Photo Credit: Clio Ancient Art and Antiquities -- source link
