notyourmoderate:dontmeantobepoliticalbut:thatpettyblackgirl: Someone took a picture of Cook County inmates being used to shovel snow without any proper winter gear. Probably for no pay. Do y'all know how cold it is in Chicago right now? So y'all using incarcerated folks to put out fires in the West coast and free labor to shovel snow in the Midwest? As it’s getting colder outside here in Chicago, let’s not forget about the time the Cook County inmates were made to shovel without proper winter gear when Chicago was in -20° temps last winter. When slavery flourishes, the first thing that has to happen is that people need to be convinced that the laboring slaves deserve their fate. Justifications have changed over the years. It’s been “we’re uplifting them from savagery”, and “they just don’t have the capacity to rule themselves”. Or “they’re happiest this way”, or “they were raised this way and it would be cruel to take it away from them”. Sometimes “they’d do this to me if they had the chance”, or other rationalizations. In this generation, the justification is “if you do the crime, you gotta do the time”.Slavery is wrong full stop. -- source link
