alasse-irena:letyourdemonsdance:A simple explanation of what radians are.#okay but what are they *for*?#hey dragon#what are radians *for*?#why can we not just use degrees?#does it somehow make math easier to switch into radians?Think of radians and degrees being similar to decimals and percentages. 75% has a meaning that we all know, but you can’t do math with 75%—you have to convert it to decimal form. You can do math with 0.75 but not 75%. Radians and degrees have a similar relationship. You have to convert degrees into radians before you can really do anything. You can use degrees for simple math, but when you get into trigonometry and higher, you’ll want to claw out your own eyes rather than use degrees. Radians make the math so much easier when you get into higher level math courses. This is because radians are based on the fundamental nature of the circle. Degrees are based on the Babylonians liking their base 60 number system and deciding that they wanted to divide a circle into 360 pieces—it’s completely arbitrary and it’s only stuck around this long because of tradition rather than actual usefulness. Well, it wasn’t *completely* arbitrary. They chose 360 because it has a lot of factors, and hence divides in a lot of way, and that was going to make *their* maths easier…It just turned out that radians makes it easier again… -- source link
