Summer’s coming early to the Brooklyn Museum. Join us this weekend for a seaside Target First Saturday in honor of our three Coney Island themed exhibitions. Step right up to the dance floor: we’ve got Fright Barker and Sons, with their Dixie punk jams; Brooklyn-based gypsy band Amour Obscur; and Raya Brass Band serving up globally-inspired, energetic dance music. Be amazed by spectacular sideshow acts: snake charming, sword swallowing, and more, curated by a professor of Sideshow Arts. Escape the heat with a showing of NYC classic The Wiz, a book club with photographer Harvey Stein, or a curator talk with Robin Jaffee Frank, Chief Curator of Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, who will pull back the curtain on some of the magic behind Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland, 1861-2008. Feel the rush of creation as you work with teaching artists to craft your own miniature Coney Island ride—the whole family is invited. If all those choices don’t have your head spinning like a Wonder Wheel, there’s more. Visual AIDS joins us in conjunction with World AIDS Day/Day With(out) Art to present RADIANT PRESENCE, a digital showcase of art by artists with HIV/AIDS. We will also be joined by Brown Girls Burlesque for Bodyspeak—an evening of theatrical burlesque that tackles topical history, political, and social issues with a side of glamour.
