lostprofile:JOSEF HOFFMANN (Austrian, 1870-1956)Josef Hoffmann was a founding member of the Vienna Secession (1897) and, with Koloman Moser, the founder of the Wiener Werkstätte (1903). Although he considered himself an architect, Hoffmann turned out over 5,000 designs for textiles, furniture, dinner services, postcards, and clothing for the studio. He also designed Schmuckwaren. Influenced by ancient Egyptian scarabs, Hoffmann used uncut semi-precious stones and cabochons for his brooches, which were set into converted belt buckles (hence their regular, squarish shapes). He catered to both ends of the market, creating hand-crafted, bespoke pieces for wealthy clients, and selling designs to mass-market jewelry manufacturers. Several Hoffman objects have been in continuous production for over 100 yearsI find it difficult to write about Josef Hoffmann, for I am utterly opposed to the direction being taken today by young artists, and not only in Vienna. For me tradition is everything – the free reign of the imagination takes second place. Here we have an artist with an exuberant imagination who can successfully attack the old traditions, and even I have to admit that it works.—Adolf Loos, 1898 -- source link
