ya-mowlana:I think it might be some time before I can get the site up with the female Sufi saints, but I made this and wanted to share it!Lalla Faḍma N’Soumer (1830–1863) was a knowledgeable scholar and mystic of the Raḥmani order, from the Kabylie region of Algeria. She inherited and headed her father’s zawiya (school/monastery) along with her brother, and was regarded as a saint by her followers. In response to growing French colonial activity and suspicion of her (zawiya’s were politically important, like taverns or coffee houses have been), she lead an armed rebellion against the French. Lalla N’Soumer was captured by the French, and she died in prison. The French destroyed her Library. The photo I based this drawing on may or may not even be Lalla N’Soumer. The attire doesn’t resemble that of the Kabylie region, and a female scholar from the time may have dressed more conservatively (or not, illustrations faithful to her region have her arms out). The photos seem to be of a traveling dancer called “Belle Fatma,” and photos of her have been associated with Lalla N’Soumer. -- source link
