Mecca, late 19th century. Everything in this image (even the mountains apparently) has been levelled since the 1970s with the exception of the Kaaba (the curtain covered structure), and replaced with a mass of ugly modern buildings, dominated by a hotel for the super-rich. Malcolm X saw the city in the 1960s, and praised it for its beauty, its ancient buildings, for the camaraderie of the pilgrims and an atmosphere that caused him to reflect on his ideas. What would he think of the city now? -- source link
