Before the battle, Richard III was heard to say ‘God forbid that I yield one step. This day I will die as a king or win’. Even his enemies unanimously agreed that he died ‘like a brave and most valiant prince, while fighting, and not in the act of flight’. The King’s last words were ‘treason, treason’ and not, as Shakespeare later claimed, ‘A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!’ William Stanley, Thomas Stanley’s brother, betrayed Richard and fought for Henry Tudor. His betrayal changed the outcome of the battle.Richard III was thrown from his horse and his servants offered him a new one, so that the King could escape from the battlefield. He didn’t run. As he fell down from his horse, losing his helmet and the crown, he received a series of blows to the head and died as a result of several fatal injuries to his skull, which was recently discovered when Richard III’s skeleton was found in Leicester.
