todaysbird:thelazypetowner:Enzo and I found a cardinal in our backyard. I took it in to help it, and it passed away in about 20 minutes before I could even clean its wound. While I can never know with certainty what happened since I didn’t see anything, I strongly suspect it was due to a cat for various reasons. In any case, whether it was or wasn’t for this specific bird, a lot of native birds are killed by cats all the time. Like all native animals, each has their own important place in the ecosystem. Around the world, native species are decreasing or going extinct partly due to outdoor and feral cats. I see enough pet cats every day, and I’m sad to see native wildlife less because of something that is 100% unnecessary and preventable. So this is my small PSA to kindly remind y'all to keep your cats indoors. They haven’t been domesticated for thousands of years for you to think they “need to be wild.”Keep your cats indoors. If you know someone who refuses to keep them in, encourage them to have their cats wear collars with bells (although it does not stop them from killing, it helps slightly). Donate to local TNR (trap-neuter-release) programs if you can to prevent future generations of ferals. If your cat loves the outdoors, there are plenty of options. Supervised outdoor playtime, harnesses, outdoor play crates. Birds deserve better! -- source link
