Hi my name is Dashawn Austin, I am a Senior Teen Night Planning Committee member, leading the first teen night of 2019, Hol’ Up! Stand Up! Speak Up!  this Friday, January 25!This time we are focusing on the themes Black institutions and blast of Black, each channeling the artwork, history and experiences expressed throughout the exhibition Soul of A Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. People have the power to create/make change, they need to pause take action and stand up for what’s right. Our teen night title embodies movement, and we were inspired in the exhibition’s movement and constant change.. We are excited to feature a handful of artists, panelists and vendors that all evoke these themes! For our performers we will be highlighting The Natural Poet, musician Wavvy Davvy, the drumline troupe Brooklyn United and our very own Dj InO. In our galleries, you will encounter a panel discussion with Black business owners, Corinna and Theresa Williams, owners of Celsious, a sustainable laundromat as well as Jason Stone, creator and Editor of The Experience Magazine, led by one of our very own BkM Teens, Stacey. This discussion will allow us to educate teens, debunk myths and stereotypes, and highlight the vibrancy and legacy of black institutions and businesses. We’ll also be serving Caribbean and Soul Food, making art and meeting other NYC teens!Leading this Teen Night has been inspirational and has provided me with the motivation to be great and make a change. The themes are important to me because they are inspired by my passion for historically black colleges and universities as well as black owned businesses, and my dream of going to one and eventually owning one as well.
