thechloris:frenchroast007:canijustbejanet:frenchroast007:iatethebiscuit:frenchroast007:For @handwithquill : This is what my sapphire engagement ring looks like. :) Sapphire’s my birthstone and blue is my favorite color.THIS. IS. SO. FUCKING. PRETTY.Basically what my husband did was, after we went ring shopping and I was like “I’d really rather have my birthstone than some random diamond someone died for” and he went to the jeweler and was all “can I buy that setting, but instead of a diamond, can it be a sapphire?” It’s a real sapphire, but it was lab-created, so most of the cost was in the setting (to this day I don’t know exactly how much it cost, but it’s ballpark with the other rings you’ve been posting). Husband says he feels like he got off cheap, but I’m like, dude, it’s fucking gorgeous and I know no one was hurt over it.How did I not know you had a sapphire? Me too!Sapphires are the best. How pretty! I didn’t want a diamond either. I was torn between ruby and sapphire for my ring, and ended up with a ruby engagement ring and a channel set ruby wedding ring. Oh those many years ago. :)The issue of blood diamonds has had way more exposure in the media, but coloured gemstones aren’t automatically ‘cleaner’. For instance, Burma produces many fine rubies and sapphires and the conditions under the repressive, corrupt government are also bad. The coloured gems trade has not developed a tracking system like the diamond trade’s ‘Kimberly process’ either, so exploitation, human rights abuse and funding of corrupt governments can fly under the radar with many types of gems. OP picked the only 100% ‘safe’ option by choosing a lab created gem. Diamonds got an especially bad rap- even though ethical diamonds *can* be found, from Canada for instance- but sadly the jewellery industry as a whole has no shortage of exploitation and abuse throughout (I was an accredited jeweller for 10 years; I left the industry altogether). -- source link
