Day 30 of 31 days of my favorite scary movies goes the 2012 supernatural horror film Sinister (directed by Scott Derrickson who also did The Exorcism of Emily Rose). Ethan Hawke stars as a ‘true crime’ writer (Ellison Oswalt) who hasn’t had a bestseller in a long time. Hoping to write another hit, Ellison moves his family into the house of a murdered family (without their knowledge). In the attic of the home Ellison finds a projector and a box of 8mm films depicting the murder of families dating back decades. From there the film is an increasingly terrifying thrill ride as the force behind the murders invades both the home and Ellison’s family. The soundtrack is one of the best I’ve heard in a horror movie, and the cinematography is highly effective at both building tension and providing the occasional jump scare. Hawke anchors a top-notch cast including good supporting work by James Ransone as the eager young deputy and Vincent D'Onofrio as a professor with expertise in the occult. -- source link
