- Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion vs. Selene and Endymion -The story of Princess Serenity of the Moon, and her lover, Prince Endymion of Earth, is actually a direct representation of the greek mythos of lunar goddess Selene and her mortal lover Endymion. Selene (Luna in Roman) was a titan moon goddess, often being overshadowed by worshipers of Artemis (Diana). She was however the only moon goddess that was seen by poets as being the Moon’s divine incarnate. Selene was depicted as a woman with a crescent or full moon crown, either riding side-saddle on a horse or riding a chariot drawn by two white winged horses. It is said that the goddess was very beautiful, with many poets calling her “white-armed” “lovely-haired” and “benevolent” and also sometimes told as having long wings and a golden diadem.Selene had a mortal love, a beautiful shepard named Endymion. Since he was mortal, Zeus gave him a choice of destinies. Endymion chose immortality in eternal slumber. This kept him young and deathless. Selene would descend from the moon at night to kiss him while he slept. Sailor Moon uses this mythology to paint a beautiful love story between Moon Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion of Earth. Like the greek goddess with her crescent crown, Serenity (and her royal family) are all depicted with a cresent moon symbol on their foreheads. They all have lovely, long blonde or silver hair and in the future, Serenity as Neo-Queen wears a golden diadem/crown. When their power is needed they are sometimes even seen with large, white wings.Princess Serenity herself was a curious, bright, childish, enthusiastic and kind and she loved nothing more than looking at Earth’s blue sphere. She was the crown princess of the Silver Millennium, but she showed little interest in her royal duties. She had many guardians, but mainly associated with the four inner Planetary Scouts (Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury).When Queen Beryl killed Endymion in front of the Princess’ eyes during her invasion of the Silver Millennium, Serenity took her own life with his sword.Prince Endymion resided in the Golden Kingdom in Elysion on Earth with his guardians, the Shitennou (Kunzite, Malahchite, Zoisite, and Jadeite). He fell in love with Princess Serenity and even though it was forbidden they met in secret whenever they could. But, the two lovers were found and separated by Kunzite and Sailor Venus. When he found that Queen Beryl was leading her forces against the kingdom on the Moon, he hurried to get there first to warn his lover and her people. Despite his warning and aid, the Moon Kingdom was destroyed, and both Prince Endymion and Princess Serenity were killed.Princess Serenity’s mother, Queen Serenity, in sorrow of her fallen kingdom, used her remaining power and the Silver Crystal to seal away the Dark Kingdom’s army.
