Algy found that watching the seemingly endless procession of snakes had a strangely soporific effect
Algy found that watching the seemingly endless procession of snakes had a strangely soporific effect, and when he awoke with a start after what seemed like a light but refreshing forty winks, he discovered that in fact St. Patrick’s Day had passed, for his hair had reverted to its natural colour once again…It was yet another fine day on his magical island in the sun and, unaccustomed to the tropical heat, Algy felt little inclined to exert himself unduly… Reaching for one of his new wee volumes of verse, in order to while away a leisurely hour or two, Algy turned the pages with enthusiasm, for this particular book contained nothing but poems about birds. Much of the volume concerned birds whom he knew only slightly, but he was delighted to discover an interesting poem about some of his own faraway cousins:Each certain kind of weather or of lighthas its own creatures. Somewhere else they waitas though they but inhabited heat or cold, twilight or dawn, and knew no other state. Then at their time they come, timid or bold.So when the long drought-winds, sandpaper harsh, were still, and the air changed, and the clouds came, and other birds were quiet in prayer or fear, these knew their hour. Before the first far flashlit up, or the first thunder spoke its name,in heavy flight they came, till I could hearthe wild black cockatoos, tossed on the crest of their high trees, crying the world’s unrest.Algy hopes that you will all have the opportunity to relax and while away a pleasant hour or two this weekend [Algy is quoting the poem Black Cockatoos by the 20th century Australian poet Judith Wright.] -- source link
