Kuwait, 1915-1956The name “Kuwait” is the diminutive of Arabic كوت kūt, meaning “fortress”. It was part of the Ottoman Empire until after World War I, when Kuwait emerged as an independent sheikhdom under the protection of the British Empire. Though still part of the Ottoman Empire, the sheikh introduced his own flag, so that British blockaders could distinguish between hostile Ottoman and friendly Kuwaiti ships. The colours red and white are typical for the region, and the writing that British described as “like an amateur outline drawing of a duck” means Kuwait in Arabic.Kuwait used flags similar to this until its independence in 1961, when a flag with pan-Arabic colours was introduced -- source link
