2timesaweek: vinylspinning: Kiss: Dynasty (1979)Today marks 40 years since Kiss simultaneously celebrated and ANNIHILATED their late ‘70s Dynasty with the divisive seventh studio album by that same name.Although, in the band’s defense: they were probably still in shock from the Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park fiasco, quickly splintering from the inside, and – let’s be frank – if you’re going to sell out to demon disco, you may as well go all the way!And that’s what Kiss did in delivering a genuine, undeniable dance-floor smash like “I Was Made for Loving’ You,” which joined “Beth” as the band’s second Gold single, peaked at No. 11 in the U.S., No. 1 in Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, New Zealand, No. 2 in Australia, etc.Alas, the remaining tracks on Dynasty had no such chart-topping excuses for riding the express train between A.O.R. and M.O.R. aboard Paul Stanley’s perniciously infectious “Sure Know Something,” Peter Criss’ borderline hysterical “Dirty Livin’,” and Gene Simmons’ simply insufferable “Charisma.”But Kiss didn’t cash in ALL of their hard rock chips, thank goodness, leaning on Ace Frehley for a trio of reliable, if unspectacular cuts in “Save Your Love,” street urchin rocker “Hard Times,” and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “2,000 Man.”And, not to be outdone by the Space Man, the Demon and Star Child (a.k.a. the anti-toxic twins) pitched in too – Simmons with the surprisingly well-aged “X-Ray Eyes,” and Stanley with the unimpeachable power chord greatness of “Magic Touch.”Makes me wonder if I should have moved Dynasty a little higher in this ranking for Loudwire, because this was definitely NOT a terrible album (things would soon get much, much worse) – just not an album most Kiss fans were looking for back in ‘79.More Kiss: Kiss, Hotter than Hell, Dressed to Kill, Alive!, Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, Love Gun, Alive II, Double Platinum, Creatures of the Night, Lick it Up.
