thehumon:My favorite part of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is how right it gets Medieval/Renaissance witch lore. It’s a surprisingly well researched show in that regard. Sure, they changed some things for the show, but you can tell it was a deliberate choice and I can respect that. It’s so much fun to watch something that gets lore, any kind of lore, right. The fact that they have their black masses in an old Christian church for example is inspired by the lore. People believed that witches used the local church at night. The sort of things they use their magic for are also very Medieval/Renaissance, like create storms or take away men’s erections. Even the familiars are spot on. Cats (Sabrina), dogs (Zelda), hares (Father Blackwood), ravens (Madam Satan) and mice (Ambrose) are all common familiars in Medieval/Renaissance lore.I can understand why they left other things out. Like, witches didn’t kiss Satan’s feet when they greeted him, they kissed his ass. Also, as a high priest witch Father Blackwood would definitely have to have sex with Satan on the regular. I wonder why they cut that out.And no, I don’t think this has anything to do with modern witches or Satanists. Funnily enough, if you pay attention the show does hint that Wicca witches exist in this universe but the satanic witches aren’t very impressed by them.Woodcuts of witch covens dancing in circles under the moon were always my favorites, so I thought I’d draw the Church of Night like a Medieval woodcut. Can we please have a scene where they do this as part of some witch holiday? -- source link
