La borie du bel air, St. Jean-du-Gard, Occitanie, 1984. In memory of a wonderful summer and with regrets that a similar time could not be spent in France in 2020. I am posting this today as it was our scheduled return date from 6 weeks in France, a trip cancelled by COVID-19. La borie du bel air has a somewhat fanciful name. It is a farmhouse with remnants of the era when Cevenol farmers cultivated silkworms. A borie is correctly a small shelter for shepherds tending flocks in highland pastures. Anyway we rented the rather primitive house for the summer of 1984 and became “le couple américain” in an area at that time largely untrodden by tourists except for a few Dutch and Brits, with lovely people, magnificent food, and easy access to local swimming holes and mountain hikes. Touristy places like Arles, Avignon, Orange and Nîmes with their music festivals and other attractions were a but short drive away. It would be difficult to imagine a better place to spend a summer. Oh yes, the weather was magnificent too. -- source link
