Pope Urban II encourages nobles and clergymen to participate in the first crusade at the Council of Clermont in 1095 (illustration from the mid-1400s). At Clermont, Urban convinced the nobles to launch a costly war to “reclaim” the Holy Land. His speech used a number of arguments to persuade them – he demonized Muslims, accentuated the plight of the failing Byzantine Empire, and argued that a crusade would provide an outlet for the feudal violence and crime that was tearing Europe apart.{WHF} {HTE} -- source link
