laporcupina:renaissance-art:Quite possibly my favorite room in the Met is this stunning studiolo. Taken from the Ducal palace in Gubbio these walls appear to have cabinet doors and decorations but are actually flat wooden panels. The technique, intarsia, involves taking different types of wood and inlaying them to form an image similar to a mosaic. Each piece has to be individually sanded, stained, cut, and fitted into the design. The result are these incredible images. The objects in these pieces are meant to reflect on the Duke’s learning in the arts, math, and science. Same, same. I love this room and visit it every trip no matter what. I remember when it first opened and there were lines and you could only stay inside for so long before you were ushered out. Now, you can go in and marvel for as long as you want. And you’ll want to for a while because these photos don’t do the space justice. (Gallery at the Met) -- source link
