Tea bowl, chawan, early 17th century. Laquered wood. Japan.Tea bowls, introduced to Japan from China during the 14th century, play a predominant role during the Japanese Tea Ceremony, a ritual of preparing and serving Japanese green tea. Each bowl is simple and rustic in its design to infuse a sense of tranquility into the ceremony. The tactile qualities of the lacquer surface also affect how the objects are handled. The smoothness of the design encourage the holder to move slowly and delicately in consideration of the form. This bowl shows a single mon or crest of the sixteen petal chrysanthemum belonging to the Imperial family. The reddish colour of the lacquer also imitates Bizen pottery. Via V & A. -- source link
