We salute mothers in their many roles with this striking work by Mary Cassatt, the only woman to exhibit with the original group of French Impressionists. Early in her career, she depicted independent young women engaged in a variety of activities, and she is best known for her later depictions of mothers and children. The woman’s striking red dress, referenced in the title, draws our eye up to the baby on her shoulder, and Cassatt made clever use of a mirror to show the mother’s face, a compositional device she might have learned from studying old master paintings, or from her close association with the French Impressionist Edgar Degas.Posted by Kim OrcuttMary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926).
