fuckyeahfelines:From Fairfax County Animal Advocates:Why are we so interested in maintaining a live release rate of over 90%? Meet Thrasher, one of the animals who make up that last 10%. He’s a cat who, in a shelter not committed to saving lives, probably would not have made it. Pets with high energy levels often have a very difficult time living in shelters, and without space to roam and burn all that energy, their behavior can deteriorate quickly. The Fairfax County Animal Shelter was able to save his life- and find his forever home- by utilizing a major component of the no kill equation: foster care. The shelter says, “Cat Sajak was having a rough time here at the shelter. Our volunteers let him out of his condo to play with him as often as possible, but it was never enough. He was getting antsy and frustrated, so we sent him to a foster home to burn off some energy. What his foster mom learned about him will make you laugh and then maybe cry (in a good way):“Cat Sajak. An atomic bomb of a cat, he’s a full-scale riot in a very tiny package. No one could have known how much we missed having a feisty cat in our lives since Big Kitty passed away in early 2014. As a young cat, she used to climb the walls; he literally bounces off them. Several times I’ve thought our two dogs were getting raucous until I realized it was only Cat Sajak, playing by himself and ricocheting off the furniture. He has our cat Scout on an exercise plan (albeit not always willingly), he comes when you call him, thinks the dogs’ water dish is his own private fountain, is chatty and curious and affectionate and has made us laugh more times than we can count. It’s too late: we are keeping this feisty cat. We’ve already renamed him, fittingly and in keeping with the current punk theme, Thrasher (Mr. T for short).”Thrasher will have plenty to keep him occupied in his forever home, since his family fosters dogs and cats for us quite often! We know he’ll be entertained by them, and will be endlessly entertaining to his family with his antics. Congrats Thrasher!“ You can view the shelter’s post on Thrasher and some pictures of him in his forever home at:https://www.facebook.com/FairfaxCountyAnimalShelter/posts/1060151657346423Stand up for the last 10%.
