filministic:Vox Lux (2018) dir. Brady CorbetUpon seeing these screenshots I realised that I have repressed this entire film. I watched it on the flight from Rome to Melbourne in 2018, enjoyed it immensely and then never thought about it again. Usually I take this to be a sign that a movie is inessential. That it reflects what the great teacher Kiarostami (RIP) calls a hostage film. Such films are incredibly thrilling and completely dominate your attention. They hold you hostage for their entire duration but then disappear the second you leave the theatre. Against these hostage films he places his own work, those films which have the dignity to allow you to fall asleep in front of them. But which then remain within your dreams for the rest of your life. And while I still believe wholeheartedly in his project, his beautiful dream films, I must propose a third type of movie to add to this typology. Vox Lux is a film which holds you hostage. This is appropriate for a film about terrorism. But then it detonates something in your subconscious. This is appropriate for a film about Pop music. I have been not-thinking about Vox Lux now for almost two years. I have a had at least a dozen dreams which I only realised now were set in the world of the film. I have actually hummed the melodies of songs which only now do I realise were featured in the film. Portman is God. And I am her most humble servant. -- source link
