one of the images from Krieg dem Kriege! (War against War!)in 1924, German conscientious objector Ernst Friedrich published a book filled with some of the most horrifying images of the Great War that he could gather. This included corpses, battlefields, destroyed towns, starving children and veterans undergoing what would come to be called plastic surgery to attempt to restore their mutilated faces. His aim was to shock. He believed that if people saw the reality of war up close in their own hands, there would be no more war. While clearly he was wrong, I post this image, and others like it, with a similar aim: show people what the Great War was really like and let it not be forgotten. The caption translates to something like: “And thank God that we still have no peace: I still say it today despite all the sacrifices.” -- source link
