The National Monument on Calton Hill from a couple weeks ago. The National Monument was modelled off the Parthenon in Athens, and was intended as a memorial to Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. Designs for the monument have it as a large church, with catacombs underneath it for burials. Construction began in 1826, and continued until 1829 when the money ran out with only half of the base and 12 columns erected. The materials and construction were very expensive, and records suggest that it took 12 horses and 70 men to move some of the larger stones to the top of Calton Hill. Over the years, several suggestions and plans for completion of the monument have been put forward, but the monument remains as it was when the money ran out. #Edinburgh #scotland #thisisedinburgh #edinphoto #edinphotowalk2015 #nationalmonument #caltonhilll #newtown #igersedinburgh #historicedinburgh #historicscotland #brilliantmoments #greatscottishadventure -- source link
