Pretty much everything millennials are “killing” costs money.Plus, unlike half the stuff we’re killing, libraries actually have a practical usewe out hereNot to be *that* millennial, but as a librarian I’d just like to say that the greatest thing you can do to support your local library is to understand how they are funded and to support their funding with your vote.Libraries can do a lot all on their own but quite often they cannot legally “toot their own horn” so-to-speak when it comes to advocating for sustaining or increasing funding, getting levies or bond issues passed, etc. Libraries need you to love them not just with your checkouts and attendance at programs. We can do that too.build libraries on dead golf courses. We Are Dewey’s Army X3Friendly reminder that many Libraries double function as free schools and other free resources, sometimes including otherwise inaccessible technology, like 3D printers. The libraries in my city host ‘English as a Secondary Language’ classes, cooking classes, classes on how to use that 3D printer, local history classes, responsible naturalistic gardening classes, beekeeping classes, and all sorts of other fun topics. Plus the plethora of clubs that use the library conference rooms as their meeting place. All for free. Support and visit your local library. Ask about their services and classes. VOTE TO KEEP THEM FUNDEDWhile we’re on the topic of libraries, please be sure to support library workers. We’re more than just the people who get you your books, and there is a lot of research coming out about low morale amongst librarians, requires a great deal of emotional labor, and report high rates of mental illness. Also, as is the case with customer facing jobs, we experience a LOT of verbal harassment from patrons, and high rates of sexual harassment. It’s also worth checking out the #protectlibraryworkers tag on Twitter to see how many library workers are being put at very high risk during the Covid-19 pandemic. Supporting libraries needs to include supporting library workers. Libraries without library workers are warehouses for books. DUDE.Now I want to make a sticker or button or both that says “DEWEY’S ARMY” and donate the proceeds to my local library.I’m in.Well, both Dewey and his system have problematic aspects, long documented. So I’d sooner not be in his army. But that said: libraries are vital, and anyone who’d harm them is going to have to come through me;. They both made me the writer I am, and help to keep the writer I am eating on a regular basis. :) LIBRARIES 4 EVER. I propose instead we declare ourselves Evey’s ArmySeconded. Or Friends of Evey. The libraries in PDX do “Drag Queen story time” where parents can bring their toddlers to enjoy story time with a drag queen, and when I first heard about it, I had two thoughts: 1. JEALOUS.2. Drag Queens are absolutely perfect for toddler story time because drunk fuckers in bars and clubs are just over-sized toddlers. They will not be phased by ANYTHING toddlers do.And then I mentioned it to my dad, and he said, “Well…I mean. Okay. But…” and went into that uncomfortable silence that translates to “I’m a conservative white male and don’t want my daughter to think I’m an asshole,” and honestly, now I love Drag Queen story time EVEN MORE. Because I realized it teaches the little ones that there’s nothing “weird’ or “uncomfortable” or “dangerous’ about Drag Queens. They’re just those nice people in those shiny clothes who like to read stories to kids! Not sorry you’re uncomfortable, Dad. Am sorry you can’t appreciate how fucking rad this is. But those kids won’t. And I hope they detail every single moment of this greatness to their uncomfortable grandparents. -- source link
