This belt hook comes from Lelang, a Chinese colony established in northwest Korea during the Han dynasty. Belt hooks are a form that the Chinese adopted from nomadic cultures of the Eurasian steppes. It is a functional and portable form of adornment that reflected the wealth and status of the owner. Horses were valuable to the Han military and Chinese campaigns to acquire horses from central Asia led to the westward expansion of the Han Empire.Posted by Rebekah PollockBelt Hook in the Shape of a Horse, 3rd century.
