thisfalconwhite:ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY15 January 1559: The coronation of Elizabeth I.After the coronation festivities of the previous day, which included a royal procession through London complete with pageants in honor of the new queen, Elizabeth Tudor entered Westminster Abbey on Sunday 15 January 1559 for the official coronation ceremony. The ritual was indicative of her religious sympathies and of her future religious policies, for it was a compromise between Catholic and Protestant practice. The anointing ceremony was conducted in traditional Latin, but the mass held afterwards was read in both Latin and English. Elizabeth played her part well throughout the long, elaborate rituals, demonstrating her talent for display that would make her one of England’s most popular and memorable monarchs. During one of the previous days’ pageants, she had addressed the crowds of London and committed herself fully, as sovereign, to the people of England:And whereas your request is that I should continue your good lady and be Queen, be ye ensured that I will be as good unto you as ever Queen was unto her people. No will in me can lack, neither do I trust shall there lack any power. And persuade yourselves that for the safety and quietness of you all I will not spare if need be to spend my blood. God thank you all. -- source link
