Spotted LakeThis shot shows a famous site named Spotted Lake, near the small Canadian town of Osoyoos in British Columbia.During the winter, this lake will be dusted with a fine layer of snow. As the snow here and in the surrounding hills melts, the water flows into the lake, taking with it small amounts of minerals eroded in the surrounding landscape. This lake receives so little water that during the summer it begins to dry up, turning the water salty. Those salts eventually become so concentrated that magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) begin to precipitate. The bottom of the lake is now divided into spots separated by elevated mineral bridges – this process has repeated so long that the full lake now separates into the individual spots and grows minerals in each pond every year. The spots turn different colors as the concentration of various elements varies between them. The aboriginal people of this area consider the site a sacred medicine lake. In the Second World War some of the minerals here were mined as a resource. Today it has been fenced off, but can be viewed from nearby roads.-JBBImage credit: Bryan Hugheshttps://flic.kr/p/EP4MgReference:http://bit.ly/2bpV163http://blog.hellobc.com/the-magic-of-spotted-lake-in-osoyoos/ -- source link
