David Hockney, who turns seventy-nine today, is an English painter, printmaker, and photographer, who widely is considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. From the beginning of his work as one of the pioneers of the British Pop art movement, Hockney openly explored the nature of his homosexuality in his art. His “We Two Boys Together Clinging” (1961), named after a Walt Whitman poem, plainly refers to the love between two men; in 1963, he painted “Domestic Scene, Los Angeles,” showing two men together, one showering while the other washes his back. As Hockney matured as an artist, so too did his presentation of gay love, as one sees in works like “Peter Getting Out Of Nick’s Pool” (1967). In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II appointed Hockney to the Order of Merit, an honor restricted to twenty-four members at any given time for their contributions to the arts and sciences. #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #queerhistorymatters #haveprideinhistory #davidhockney (at London, United Kingdom) -- source link
