Crispus (d. 326)The eldest son of Constantine the Great who became Caesar in 317 together with his half-brother and cousin. This coin was issued between 317 and 324 by co-emperor Licinius in honor of Crispus. Young Caesar is depicted wearing an armour and holding a spear and has a texture. “ N CRISPVS SEMPER VICTOR NOB C” . The textures of Roman coins are naturally mainly imperial propaganda but Crispus was actually a very competent military leader. He fought and won many battles against invading Germanic forces and also helped his father to beat rival emperor Licinius in a civil war that took place during the middle of 320s. After the war Crispus was on the top of his political and military career and also an obvious heir-apparent to the throne. For some unknown reason though, Constantine the Great had his son executed in 326 CE. Some historians have speculated that Crispus’ life ended due to intrigues of his step-mother Fausta, but no clear evidence of this has been found.Source Digitales Münzkabinett der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf.
